NYX Total Control Foundation Review

I’m very fussy when it comes to foundations. I like a full coverage and matte finish that isn’t going to cost me an arm and a leg. I’m constantly on the search for “the one”.

Not long ago, I picked up NYX’s Total Control Foundation from Boots for £14.00. The foundation is available in 24 shades, from Pale to Deep Espresso and most skin tones in between. I ordered online, so I took a guess at my shade and picked up Porcelain. I was relieved to find that it matched my skin tone well – I really dislike choosing shades without seeing them in person.

The foundation is contained in a glass bottle with a dropper. If you are unaware, this is a drop foundation. NYX created this to help users create their ideal coverage. The bottle contains 13ml of product and is cruelty-free.

Formula

The formula is very thin and runny. However, the smooth consistency made the product very easy to blend on my skin. When applied to my skin, I found that the shade didn’t alter at all. Once dried down, the foundation appears as a semi-matte.

Coverage

The packaging suggests it will take 4 or more drops for a full coverage. I found 4 wasn’t enough, I use around 8-9 drops to create a coverage that I’m happy with, as I have a few imperfections and my skin tone can be uneven.

While this amount creates a good coverage, I go through the bottle incredibly quickly. This foundation can last me anywhere between 3-4 weeks. I can’t sit and complain, because this product is designed to offer a coverage personal to you. I’d say that if you like a full coverage foundation, this probably isn’t the best option, unless you don’t mind purchasing frequently.

Wear

I have a full-time job, so I’m usually wearing my make-up for around 12 hours. Straight away on application, the product clings to dry patches, these get worse throughout the day and can make breakouts appear awfully cakey. After around 5-6 hours, the foundation starts to fade, especially around my chin and nose. Towards the end of the day, at about 8-9 hours, the foundation begins to appear cakey across my entire face.

I feel like I’ve been very negative so far about the product, but overall, the foundation is good. It’s got a buildable coverage, a lovely semi-matte finish and lasts ok throughout the day. Personally, I run through the bottle way too fast, only due to the fact I much prefer a full coverage. For me, its not “the one” but it’s my go-to drugstore foundation.

What’s your go-to drug store foundation?

I love Colourstay by Revlon, I’ve used it for a number of years now and still love it. They have two different formulas – one for normal/dry skin and one for normal/oily skin so there’s one for everybody. Despite loving this foundation, I found myself looking for something different purely because I wanted to see what else was out there and I picked up Maybelline’s Fit Me foundation. I’ve only used it a couple of times as I don’t wear foundation to work but I’ve found myself reaching for it over Colourstay!
    😊 xo

I’m glad you’ve found some foundations that work for you! I haven’t tried those as Revlon and Maybelline are sold in China, therefore tested on animals. Thank you for reading though lovely! Xx

Thanks for doing this review! I’ve been contemplating purchasing this for a while as I have quite dry skin so only certain foundations work for me. I personally love Rimmel’s wake me up foundation! 💕
